Clown Bluey's History of Clowns: Modern 20th century clowns: Nicolai Poliakov was born in Latvia which was under the rule of Russia. He had a very hard upbringing and spent a lot of his younger life wandering. He was appearing in Germany for Circus Busch when he was seen by Bertum Mills equestrian Director and invited to Britain. He and his six children moved to Britain and he stayed with Bertram Mills Circus until Mills shut in the 1960's, when he retired, although he came out of retirement briefly at another circus before he died. He is one of the only clowns to be honoured by receiving an OBE for his work for road safety for children. |
