Clown Bluey's History of Clowns: Greek Clowns: Improvisation was a strong element in the art of the ancient Greek clown. He was one of the stock figures in popular farces based on mythological themes. The clown would wear tights, a short tunic with half sleeves and would be grotequely padded back and front whilst an exaggerated artificial phallus would be strapped around his loins. His face was daubed with paint or soot and he wore a mask with a yawning wide mouth which amplified his voice. Wealthy Greeks would employ clowns, who were known as 'parasites',and would enjoy much favour and patronage in return for their wit, repartee and mimicry |
